Bed preparation is critical for the success of 3D printing, especially with materials such as PETg. This preparation method seems to work well for all materials we use for 3D printing.
- Wash and clean the glass bed thoroughly.
- Apply Layerner Bed Weld to the glass plate
- Affix 3M 2080EL-48E 2″ ScotchBluePainters Masking Tape Delicate Surface
- Apply Bed weld to the painter’s tape
Washing the bed removes any bed weld, glue from the painters tape, and any filament that may have adhered to the bed. A buildup of these materials will affect the finish quality on a 3D print, and may also affect the automatic tests for a level print bed.
Some filaments such as PETgĀ can bond to the glass bed to a degree where removal of the filament results in glass chips being removed from the bed. The first application of the bed weld helps ensure that the painter’s tape does not curl and peal when the bed is heated. The painters tape protects the glass bed from the filament bonding, and also provides a smooth surface for printing. The second application of bed welt helps ensure that the printed object sticks to the painters tape.
